Creating a 9 patch hand piecing square. Materials supplied, but you are free to bring your own fabric. Nine patches are a traditional quilt block made with nine simple squares. Three rows of three squares create quilt design that is versatile, traditional and trendy — all at the same time. Today, most beginner quilt classes include a nine patch block. By choosing light and dark fabrics, and using them next to one another, a small checkerboard appears. There are no fancy tricks, or difficult techniques needed to make a wonderful simple block with so many possibilities. Because of this, nine patches are the perfect block for either hand piecing or machine piecing.

Coptic Bookbinding

Nancy VanWinkle

Tuesdays March 10 & 17

5:00 – 7:00pm

Cost: $45 + $10 materials fee

Must Pre-Register by: 3/3

In Coptic Bookbinding, participants will learn the whole process- from start to finish- to create a unique art journal.  We will select beautiful handmade papers for the hardbound covers and sew the open-spine binding using a traditional paired needle Coptic binding technique.  This form of Coptic binding creates a lovely chain stitch at every sewing station and results in a structurally strong book with high-quality mixed-media pages for writing, drawing, doodling, or whatever your heart desires!   This promises to be a full-immersion experience in bookbinding; participants will leave with a handmade blank book and a wealth of knowledge.

Bio: Nancy VanWinkle spent nearly a decade teaching adolescents in a land-based Montessori program; it was here that she started teaching visual journaling as a form of self-expression.  Over time, her love of books grew, and Nancy learned everything she knows about bookbinding from Asheville-based artist, Erin Keane, dynamic book-binder and encaustic innovator. Nancy has been honored to join Erin as her teaching assistant at both John C. Campbell Folk School and Penland School for the Arts in western North Carolina.  A relatively new transplant to Vermont, Nancy teaches classes through local organizations and creates books in her home-based Nomadic Roots Studio, located in Craftsbury Village.

Rug Hooking for Beginners

Join Stephanie Allen-Krauss for an educational and relaxing afternoon of rug hooking. Class content includes basic technique, helpful tips and suggestions on mastering the technique, and ways to keep your body safe and healthy while rug hooking. Through lecture, demonstration and hands-on work, students will experience this historic craft while working on a small project to take home.

Stephanie has been teaching all aspects of rug hooking for many years in her Montpelier shop, Green Mountain Hooked Rugs, and will display some of her rugs as well as share some of the history of rug hooking.

The materials fee ($45) covers the cost of a kit which includes a pre-printed design, all the cut strips to complete the design, a color photo and a hook. They will have the opportunity to use a frame during class and then buy it at the end if they want to for an additional $35 fee paid directly to the instructor.

Even if you are not a beginner, you are welcome to come and brush up on your technique and enjoy the camaraderie of other rug hookers.

Do you know that snow is not always white? Do you know that white areas in watercolor are the unpainted areas of the painting? Come join us as we paint together and focus on the winter landscape.

This class is for anyone who wants to learn and develop watercolor painting skills. AS we paint together, you will discover how to paint winter, the mountains, the trees, the snow – you will also experience the fun and joy of painting with watercolor. Come join us for a four (4) week “NO FAIL” painting class.

Lessons on painting wet-into-wet, simple landscapes, and the importance of learning to see and paint negative spaces are a few examples of the way the student artists will engage with pigment, shape and composition.

Painting materials will be provided for the class. However, if you have any watercolor supplies of your own, bring them to the first class as we will be discussing materials and supplies.

Rosalie and Patti are sisters who are retired art educators and administrators. Both are experienced watercolorists who frequently teach and paint together. Rosalie resides in Hardwick. Patti, who lives in Lebanon, NH is a frequent visitor to Hardwick.

Rosalie’s work is currently on display in the Clip Joint gallery area om downtown Hardwick until the end of October. Her website is: rdgstudio.com.
